Old Postcard

The caption to the postcard I have added indicates the year 1941, behind the building one sees the old Amphitheater, later named as the Veterans Memorial Stadium for a few years until it was replaced by the present stadium. There are pictures of this old Amphitheater that are mislabelled as the new (1936) stadium without seats! The old Amphitheater was a horse shoe shaped structure completely of earth and without seating; existing still to a large extent is that inclined earth ramp in Independence Park. It stood behind the Armory Auditorium and served as a sports haven for a number of years; I am not exactly sure yet when it was formed, although I can at least date it to after 1904-5 when Independence Park was designed and realized in the drained water reservoir of the 1890s. I will add one of the seatless pictures to this blog soon.

Charlotte Map circa 1925

Here is what the city looked like about 83 years ago. Also, I have added a very interesting picture of this morning's sunrise--what you see is the REFLECTION of the sun off of the Wachovia Building Uptown April 29th, 2008.

Sunday, April 27

Last night was a terrible night for sleeping. I heard the sound of dripping from my kitchen ceiling for most of the night. This is odd though, the drip spontaneously stopped sometime before sunrise. I DO so hope this is not storm related stuff. Odd while it was leaking, there was not a drop of rain, the thunderstorm of the earlier day was at least five hours earlier, and the leak happened from about midnight to about 5 AM. The bathroom in the above apartment is at that very spot also, but not one drop of wetness in that area....
I think I live in a very playfully haunted house!
Here is a picture of the place about the year 1932--33. It is the two-color place with two front porches just beyond the stone "bleachers" that did stand across the street in the field of the old Central High School. The house is the most to the right of the picture. There is the place! The building that is obviously quite large to the left was the field building that Central High used for all sports related needs and there was a wall that encircled the whole. The area is now where the Memorial Stadium sits (later dedicated in September 1936).

Smashing Pumpkins "My Blue Heaven"

Go here for a cozy version of the song as well as a black and white silent movie;

I LOVE the parlor piano, just enough out-of-tune that you know it could be your grandma's front room...Valentine's 1928...

Lyrics to a Song Dec.17th, 1927

MY BLUE HEAVEN

Day is ending, birds are wending
Back to the shelter of
Each little nest they love.
Nightshades falling, lovers calling
What makes the world go 'round ?
Nothing but love.
When whippoorwhills call
And evening is nigh
I hurry to my Blue Heaven.
A turn to the right a little white light
Will lead you to my Blue Heaven.
You'll see a smiling face, a fireplace, a cosy room,
A little nest that's nestled where the roses bloom,
Just Mollie and me and baby makes three,
We're happy in my Blue Heaven.

Last Name: SUTTLE

I have discovered a package of screws, nails and basement detritus. On the side is written "Suttle" & on the other side "302 Park Terrace."
This assures me that my house has not always had its present address.
The Carolina Room will be getting a visit from me in the next few days.
I will be attending the Progressive Dinner hosted by the Elizabeth Community as well as have had a call-back from the county historic commission. I telephoned them to say I had uncovered a few bits of Charlotte history that are incorrectly labeled and noted on the web. This we shall look into and get everything happy to what really happened, back starting in that great year of 1925.
