Route 74 was set as the number relegated to the main highway to Wilmington and the Beach in 1926. The road then, in the Charlotte area, was/is known as Independence Boulevard, which connects to the City in the Elizabeth neighborhood at the corner of 7th Street at Charlottetowne. Independence Park can be seen from this corner as well as Veterans Memorial Stadium and a somewhat blocked view of Uptown (what most would think of as "Downtown").
