"Wayne Brothers, Inc. made the largest single concrete placement to date in the company's 24-year history. The pour took place at Central Piedmont Community College's New Student Parking Deck # 3 at the Central Campus in Charlotte, NC. It was the first of two scheduled mat foundation pours for this Wayne Brothers' project.
The pour consisted of more than 3,500 cubic yards of 4,000-psi self-consolidating concrete and 320 tons of reinforcing steel. Self-consolidating concrete is utilized in order to eliminate the need for mechanical vibration and to minimize the placement labor required. The mat foundation ranged in thickness from 4' to 7'-3" and included multiple foundation elevation changes, a monolithically cast elevator pit and cast-in embeds for the pre-cast parking deck structure above. The pour maintained an average placement rate of 300 cubic yards per hour and was completed in 12 hours. Coastal Carolina Pumping, Inc. provided three 47 meter concrete truck pumps and one 61 meter backup truck pump for the massive pour. Concrete Supply Company, Inc. provided the self-consolidating concrete for the foundation and utilized 47 ready mix trucks and 3 plants for a total of 450 truck loads of concrete to support the pour.
Wayne Brothers' project manager, Daniel Wayne, explained, "With the magnitude of this pour and with as many site logistical challenges that it presented, it was successfully executed as planned for a few simple reasons: a good plan and excellent commitment to safety, quality and service!"
The last mat foundation pour for the new parking deck is [was] scheduled to be complete by the end of November."
